Student Life

Moffat Bible College provides a number of well-rounded experiences for its students in order to help them become effective servants of Jesus Christ. This can be seen in its various activities and organizations, the services it provides, and the regulations and discipline it maintains.

Activities and Organizations

Spiritual

Student CouncilCare for oneÕs spiritual growth is essential for all students. In addition to their own personal devotions, students will benefit from dormitory devotions, small groups that meet for the purpose of mentoring, spiritual growth and prayer for practical ministries, class fellowships, menÕs and womenÕs fellowships, communion, chapel, prayer days, missions days, and other special meetings.

Academic

Student CouncilThe college provides courses, assignments, seminars, special speakers, and audio/visual media that are designed to challenge and inform. Students are also encouraged to pursue subjects of personal interest by making use of the library, or by meeting with lecturers for discussion and learning.

Practical Ministries

Student CouncilMoffat provides a variety of activities whereby students may serve the church while gaining practical experience. Many of these activities occur on Sunday, while others occur during the week. Each student receives an assignment to a church or other institution from the Practical Ministries Director each term. These assignments include such ministries as teaching Sunday school, working with Christian Youth in Action, leading Bible studies, leading music, preaching and leading services in secondary schools, in hospitals or in orphanages, and more. Diploma students participate in a twoÐweek annual outreach during the August vacation after Year 2 Term 3. Higher Diploma students are assigned to teach weekly pastoral Bible classes in area primary schools. Students are expected to prepare well for these ministries, spending time in prayer and preparation. Students are evaluated each term for their participation in practical ministry.

Social

Student CouncilThe Student Council Social Life Committee sponsors a number of college socials each term. These socials provide each student with much needed relaxation and the opportunity for self-expression and learning. Each day has scheduled into it some Òfree time,Ó in which students can socialize and relax. The Fred Gibbon Student Centre is also available for relaxation, fellowship, table tennis, darts, checkers and chess. Various sports are organized at Moffat, including volleyball and soccer. All who are interested are encouraged to join or to support a team.

Student Council

Student CouncilSince many Moffat graduates go on to serve in various positions of leadership within the church, the student council is an excellent opportunity for those who have certain abilities in the areas of administration and leadership to develop those abilities. Those elected to the student council represent the interests of their fellow students to the administration, engage in problem solving, and act as role models for their peers.

Diversity

Moffat's students and faculty are quite diverse.

Our students come from all over Kenya and from Tanzania, Sudan, and Congo. We have students who are former Muslims, and students from unreached people groups. Many of our students are Kambas, Kikuyus, or Kalenjins but we have representatives of many other tribes, and all are very welcome.

Moffat students are training for further academic pursuits as well as for diverse ministries such as writers, prison chaplains, counselors, Christian school teachers, local church pastors or foreign missionaries.

Moffat is training these men and women for effective Christian ministry in Africa and the world. We do this in pursuit of our vision to be a leading ministry training centre that impacts communities through the application of Biblical truth.

Our teachers come from Kenya, Republic of China, Switzerland, Canada and the United States. In addition to our other Kenyan faculty, our Principal and Vice Principal for Academics are Kenyan.

History

Moffat Bible College is a part of the African Inland Church, but welcomes students from other denominational backgrounds.

The W.Y. Moffat Memorial Bible Training Institute opened on 11 February 1929, after more than a decade of planning. Founded by the Africa Inland Mission at its headquarters in Kijabe, the school was created for the purpose of training evangelists and pastors for the growing church in Kenya and [the school] published Christian material and Bible courses. The name Moffat was adopted in honor of a faithful Christian from the United States by the name of William Y. Moffat, whose widow and son provided the financial means to build the first structures. Charles Teasdale, the first principal and teacher, led the school for more than 40 years.

When the school opened in 1929, there were just four students. Since then, Moffat has developed and upgraded its programme. As first it offered a three year Bible course taught in Kiswahili. In 1942, a two year Pastors' Course, also in Kiswahili was added to prepare for ordination those who had finished the Bible School Course and had spent some time in ministry. In 1968, the two courses were merged into a single four year programme and the medium of instruction was changed from Kiswahili to English. The school changed its name to Moffat College of Bible in 1977, and then in 1982 became a post secondary institution. From those first four students over seventy years ago, the size of the student body has grown significantly, until Moffat now enrolls over 70 students, drawn from many different tribes throughout Kenya" (Moffat College of Bible Prospectus 2000-2004, pp. 3-4).

Moffat offers a three year Diploma and a one year Higher Diploma in the following majors: Bible & Theology, AIDS Ministries, Pastoral Ministries, Chaplaincy and Counseling, Christian Education, Inter-Cultural Studies. We also offer a certificate program.
